The company began operations in April 2010 following the merger of NEC Electronics and Renesas Technology; NEC Electronics was the surviving legal entity and was renamed Renesas Electronics, while Renesas Technology had been formed in 2003 from the non-DRAM semiconductor operations of Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric. After severe financial difficulties in the early 2010s, Renesas underwent restructuring with state-backed support and expanded through subsequent acquisitions. As of 2025, Renesas ranks third worldwide in the microcontroller (MCU) market, behind Infineon Technologies and NXP Semiconductors, and fifth in the broader automotive semiconductor market with a 7% share in 2024.
